Brief Bio
First, a few
words about Dr Qiu's (very tricky) last name. To slow down the
inevitable "mutational meltdown" of the spelling of immigrant names in
the U.S., he prefers his last name to be spelled as "Q-I-U", not the
English convention of "Q-U-I". For pronunciation, he prefers his
last name to be pronounced as "Chiu" (as in "Chu-ba-ba" of the Star War
character), not "Q", although his daughter has given up ever since she
started elementary school and now calls herself "Grace Q".
Dr Qiu was
born and grew up in Shanghai,
China. He got his B. Sc. degree in Biochemistry from Fudan
University, Shanghai, China in 1986. He held a Master's
Degree in
Biotechnology from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He studied
in Dr Daniel Dykhuizen's lab at State
University of New York, Stony
Brook and graduated in 1999 with a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution.
He
spent three years as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr Arlin Stolzfus's lab
in CARB, University of Maryland
Biotechnology Institute, specializing
in evolutionary bioinformatics. He started in Hunter College as
an Assistant Professor of Biology in Fall, 2002.
In science, Dr Qiu
is interested in studying the
microbial
model of evolution and biodiversity. He enjoys writing computer
codes for visualization and analyses of evolutionary data.
His non-science
hobbies include playing cards, majong, volleyball, and classic
guitar, reading Sherlock Holmes stories, and reading and composing
classic Chinese poems.
